Harmoniums are a free standing keyboard instrument simular to a reed organ. Sound is produced by air being blown through sets of free reeds, resulting in a sound simular to that of an accordion. The are is usully supplied by bellows operated by your foot, hand or knees.

 

Harmoniums reached the height of their popularity in the West in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. They were especially popular in small churches and chapels. The Beatles helped bring the Harmonium into pop music by using it in many of their recordings such as We can Work it Out, Cry Baby Cry, The Inner Light and more.
